Mouse problems in a Blackboard Test

There has been a problem in Blackboard tests with the new computer mice in the IT computing labs.  These mice have forward and back buttons on the left hand side of the mouse.  Recently a few students taking a Blackboard test inadvertently hit these buttons and found themselves exited from the test.  Given that they were only allowed one attempt to take the test they could not complete the test.

While it is not possible to switch off this forward/back mouse functionality and it not feasible to replace all ‘mice’ in a lab, it is possible for a number of old style ‘mice’ (without the forward/back buttons) to be made available for exam purposes and these could be used by any student who would like to use them.  In addition to indicating clearly at the beginning of the exam that students must be careful using their mouse and should save after each question unfortunately that is all that can be done.  If you would like to have a number of old style ‘mice’ do contact Alan Wilson in ITCS.

I ran in to this problem doing a BB test with a large class several years ago and reported it to BB support. Several students had to redo a 40 question test having accidentally hit the mouse’s back button. Subsequently the offending mice in A1.01 were changed though I don’t know if that was related to my report. Now they are back it seems.

Not sure why it should be infeasible to replace all the mice- they cost peanuts surely? In any case there is a simple solution which I have just implemented for my office machine in about two minutes.

    1) remove two Phillips screws
    2) open case
    3) take out two buttons
    4) close case and replace screws

  2. Thanks for cataloging all of this. Really good to have this feedback on the Web. I wish you all the best in the FTC route. If you do end up considering other options, then I’d recommend http://www.scholar360.com. The transition to another LMS is always going to be challenging, but working with the right people and technology can make it less painful.

These comments really point to the need for LMS companies to be common cartridge compliant. It is just way to much of a pain to have to import material from one system to anothe.
